Detailed information about this course:

Description

This course is designed to help you become aware of what it is that makes texts work, and it will help you apply this knowledge in practice. During the course you will be working on the different sections of your own research paper. You will also receive feedback from your peers and instructor. By the end, you will have a draft which you can use to develop your research paper further.

The course starts with two sessions by professor Arfan Ikram and professor Frank Wolters in Februari. Additionally there are 5 sets of 5 dates available for this course.

Objectives

Our three main objectives are:

  • to understand the role of each section of a medical research paper as part of a greater narrative;
  • to critically evaluate the medical writing of others;
  • to write accessible research papers, focusing on style, cohesion, flow, and narrative.

To achieve these aims, we will combine theory, exercises, analysis of authentic publications, peer feedback, and writing practice.

Participant profile

This course is part of our master programmes (MSc Heath Sciences 70 EC, Research Master in Health Sciences and Research Master in Clinical Research) and is therefore only open to students of these programmes. Other Erasmus MC PhD students interested in this course might find a suitable alternative in the PhD-course on Biomedical Writing [PHDCO-005].
